Yes, you absolutely can! For a small repair like yours, a wet sanding sponge is actually one of the best options for a DIYer who does not want to invest in a $100 or even $3,000+ drywall sanding machine.

My go-to is the MARSHALLTOWN wet sanding sponge.  This one isn’t a standard “sanding sponge” you see everywhere, and it’s specifically designed for it.   If this were a bigger renovation, I would recommend the WEN Drywall Sander instead.

It’s important not to buy just any sanding sponge. You need one with an actual sponge that can hold water.

How to wet-sand drywall compound

1. Partially fill a bucket with clean water.
2. Wet the sponge, then squeeze it thoroughly so it is only lightly damp—not dripping.
3. Use very light pressure, especially along the edges where the dried compound meets the existing wall.
4. Rinse and wring out the sponge as it picks up compound.
5. Let the repaired areas dry completely before applying primer or paint.

On a small repair, this keeps airborne dust to a minimum while still allowing you to smooth the compound.
