Does a Level 0 Drywall Finish Keep Bugs Out?

No, a Level 0 finish won’t keep bugs out, even if you have a plastic vapor barrier behind it. While the plastic helps with moisture, bugs will still easily find their way through the untaped seams between your drywall sheets.
In fact, even a Level 5 finish doesn’t guarantee a bug-free room, as insects usually find intrusion points under baseboards, around window trim, or through HVAC vents.
What is the optimal finish level to keep bugs out? If you are just doing the bare minimum to seal the wall, you need at least a Level 1 finish.
A Level 1 finish includes embedding joint tape in the compound. This does two critical things:
Seals the gaps: It covers the seams where the two pieces of drywall meet, eliminating the easiest bug entry points.
Meets fire code: More importantly, a taped seam satisfies basic fire code requirements for a finished space.
The final level you choose just depends on how pretty you want the wall to look, but never skip the tape!
What I Think Is Happening
Open board joints and penetrations permit pest and air movement; the plastic layer alone is not continuous or durable enough at details.
What I’d Check First
Perimeter gaps, utility penetrations, outlets, tears in the membrane, sill/top plate gaps, and whether the assembly has fire or moisture requirements.
How I’d Repair It
Prefill/tape drywall joints and directly seal pest entry paths with suitable backing and sealant; preserve required fire/moisture details.
Tools & Materials
Joint compound and tape; appropriate caulk/sealant; pest-resistant mesh/backing; listed fire-blocking materials where required.
