Microwave Leaking Water: It Wasn’t Condensation

Today, I want to share a recent experience I had in my kitchen that led me to address an unexpected issue – a microwave leaking water. I believe my journey of identifying the problem and finding an effective solution could be helpful to others facing a similar situation. Here’s how I tackled the problem step by step.

Identifying the Issue

It all started when I noticed water pooling on top of my oven after rainstorms. At first, I assumed it was just condensation due to the changes in humidity. However, as the issue persisted, I knew it was time to investigate further.

If you’re unfamiliar with how some microwaves are installed, many installed over an oven will have a vent that leads to the roof.  In my specific situation, I was able to confirm this by opening the cabinets above the microwave and seeing the vent.

After noticing that my particular microwave had this vent, I figured it was a good idea to go on the roof and check it out myself.  If you’re not comfortable with DIYing any roof leaks, I recommend getting a quote from a company known for leak repairs.  Most will come out with a ladder, confirm any issues and submit a quote to you quickly.

Investigation and Diagnosis

Upon closer examination, I discovered that the water leakage was not caused by condensation. Instead, the culprit was the microwave’s exterior vent. Over time, the weatherproof seal around the vent had deteriorated, creating gaps that allowed rainwater to seep into the microwave.  Here is a picture I took to illustrate the vent on top of my home directly above the microwave:

As you can see around this, the previous tar that was used to fix this vent had whithered away over time.  I had bought this home 5 years ago, so who know’s when they had installed/repaired this.

Choosing a Solution

With the root cause identified, I began searching for a solution. I decided to take a DIY approach to address the problem effectively and cost-efficiently. After consulting with professionals and researching online, I opted to use roof cement to seal the gaps around the exterior vent.

This was one of the cheapest options I had to repair it quickly.  Below I’ll share the quick-fix repair steps to get your vent leak free again!

Repair Process

Here’s how I went about fixing the issue:

  1. Gathered Supplies: I purchased a tube of roof cement from a local hardware store. I also made sure I had a putty knife and gloves for the application.
  2. Preparation: Before applying the cement, clean around the area around the vent to ensure proper adhesion. I also made sure to choose a dry day for the repair.
  3. Application: Using the putty knife, I carefully applied the roof cement around the vent area, focusing on sealing any gaps or openings that I had identified. I ensured a uniform application for effective sealing.
  4. Drying Time: I allowed the roof cement to dry and cure according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. This ensured a strong and long-lasting seal.

Testing the Fix

The real test came with the next rainy day. I was relieved to find that there were no more puddles on the oven top. The microwave was finally leak-free, and the issue had been successfully resolved.

Key Takeaways

Reflecting on this experience, a few important takeaways come to mind:

  1. Thorough Investigation: Don’t dismiss seemingly minor issues. Investigate further to identify the root cause accurately.
  2. DIY Initiative: A practical, do-it-yourself approach can often provide effective solutions, saving you time and money.  If you never feel safe with DIY, hire a roof repair professional.
  3. Regular Maintenance: Regularly inspect and maintain your appliances to prevent issues from escalating.

Hiring A Roof Repair Company Nearby

If the idea of climbing onto the roof or handling roof repair materials doesn’t align with your comfort level or expertise, don’t worry. There are professionals available for such tasks. Consider searching for “roof repair near me” to find reputable local roofing companies that can help assess the situation and provide a solution.

Hiring experts ensures that the repair is done safely and effectively, giving you peace of mind knowing that your home is in capable hands. Remember, your safety is paramount, and it’s always a wise decision to seek professional assistance if you’re uncertain about tackling the repair yourself.

Conclusion

Dealing with a microwave leaking water might not be a common problem, but it’s essential to be prepared to address unexpected household issues. By identifying the problem, choosing a suitable solution, and taking a proactive approach to repair, you can ensure the efficient functioning of your appliances and your home.

I hope my experience provides valuable insights for those facing a similar situation. Remember, with a bit of research, the right tools, and a can-do attitude, you can tackle various household challenges successfully.
