What Best Fits Your Needs?

When you say the best drywall taping tool set, are you looking for the best drywall taping tool set for your budget? Or are you looking for the best-selling drywall taping tool set?  Not all drywall taping tools are created equally; how they’re manufactured, how long they last, and the warranties they come with are all things to consider.  I’m going to be sharing different ones after educating you on the differences.

Stainless Steel vs Blue Steel vs Carbon Steel

Let’s break down the differences between stainless steel, blue steel, and carbon steel without diving into manufacturing complexities:

  1. Stainless Steel: Offers limited flexibility but boasts remarkable durability, ensuring a longer lifespan.
  2. Blue Steel: This type is impressively flexible and actually falls under the category of carbon steel, but with added rust-resistant treatment.
  3. Carbon Steel: Known for its high flexibility, but be mindful of maintenance as it’s more susceptible to rust without proper care.

Four Tips To Make Your Drywall Taping Knives Last

If you want to get your money’s worth out of your taping knife set, you should know the proper care for them to give them the longest possible life.

#1  Never let your drywall taping knives soak for a long time in water.

This is one of the quickest ways to turn what you considered your best drywall taping tool set, to now unusable.  Allowing them to soak in water is asking for rust, your knives will start to break down leaving brown residue over your compound, and not to mention the surface will no longer be flat.  This goes for stainless steel knives as well!

#2 Clean your taping knives after every use.

To avoid the need for soaking, I ALWAYS clean them at the end of the day; so none of the joint compounds has time to harden onto its surface.  When I picked up my very first drywall taping tool set, I figured I could just scrape it off the next day – it’s the wrong way to go about it and will wear them down fast!  I typically use a dishwashing brush to clean all of the crevices of the knives.

#3  Always allow them to dry in the standing up position.

I always keep my knives inside a mud pan so any excess water from cleaning them can clear out of the handle.  Laying them flat can also cause any water to pool up and sit on the blade which can lead to premature rust.

#4 Protect Your Taping Knives

It is recommended to spray down your taping knives with WD-40 after they are clean.  This ESPECIALLY goes for carbon steel and blue steel knives.  This will help you get the max life possible out of them.

  1. This is a very helpful post on the best drywall taping sets. I had been wondering why some of the blades tend to rust quicker than others, and realise now that it is because of the different types of metal that is used. Fantastic tips on how to clean the tools and to let them drip off in a mud bath, so that any excess water can drip out of the handles.

Does one get a different finish with the different types of blades? So would one need each of the different blades, or would a stainless steel that tends to rust les and last longer be sufficient? Thank you.

    1. Thanks so much for your question!

Since stainless steel isn’t very flexible, it requires a little bit more work on the hands in order to feather out edges – where as with blue steel/carbon steel will be much easier to feather out edges with it’s flexible properties.  But regardless, you can still get the same finish with either.

In my every day work, I use stainless steel on all phases of drywall finishing.

      Hope this helps!
